CLINICAL INTERVIEWING

General Information:
Beds: 25 LDRP, 3 Obstetrical emergency room beds, 6 post-op/antepartum beds (4 rooms double occupancy)
Will you accept a first-time traveler? no
Minimum years of experience for traveler? 2
# of deliveries a month? About 200
Patient Types:
Antepartum, Laboring, post-partum. We have a level 3 NICU so take patients that require a higher level of care.
Patient Ratios:
Labor: 1:1-2 (dependent on stage of labor and acuity)
Mother Baby: 1:3 couplets (dependent on patient acuity)
Required Licensure & Certifications:
Licensure: RN, CST
L&D: ACLS, NRP
ALSO preferred
MB: NRP, BLS

Skills required:
Labor and Delivery: Independent IV starts and lab draws from IV start, accurate vaginal exams, provide labor support, fetal monitor strip interpretation according to NICHD guidelines, strong ability to multi-task, communicate, comfortable with asking questions, and easily adapts to a new unit. We typically do not assign travelers to the triage role and do not require them to circulate unless they have previous experience. Can be 2nd RN in OR if they have experience and are comfortable with OR.
L&D Staffing: Typically 6-8 RNs on Nights with 1-2 on call
Mother Baby: Assessment of postpartum patients both vaginal and post-op c-section, & antepartum. Assessment and admission of newborn. Assist and assess breastfeeding needs. Will occasionally have women post-surgical patients i.e., hysterectomy. Strong ability to multi-task, communicate, comfortable asking questions, and easily adapts to new unit
Mother Baby Staffing: Typically 7 RNs on Days and 7 on Nights
Support on the Unit:
CNA: 1-2 per shift. RN primary care
Receptionist/HUC: 1-2 each shift, varies on time of day
Charge nurse: 1 for L&D and 1 for Mother Baby each shift
Phlebotomy: L&D RNs draw labs with IV starts and can perform phlebotomy if they are comfortable
IV/VAT Team: L&D starts their own IVs but we do have IV therapy if needed for difficult starts
Resource Nurse
RT: in house and attend deliveries with NICU
Hospitalist: OB and Peds Hospitalist coverage 24/7
Anesthesia: CRNA in house 24/7, Anesthesiologist called in for C-section/emergencies
Telemetry monitoring: remote
Are RNs required to read/measure tele strips? No, but should recognize when there is a need to call a rapid response and/or for anesthesia support.
Technology/Equipment:
EMR: EPIC
IV pumps: Alaris
Medication dispensing: Omnicell
Monitors: GE Corometrics
Floating: If yes, where?
L&D floats to Mother Baby. Mother Baby floats off the unit if needed.
Orientation:
Hospital NEO
With preceptor on unit depends on experience
Scheduling:
Weekend rotation: Every other weekend as needed
On call? If so, what is that schedule? L&D takes 24 hours of call per 4 week schedule period
Holiday Expectations: depends on shift, 1 summer holiday and 1 winter holiday
RTO: As part of our program, we approve up to 7 days of RTO, would you like us to text you if any additional days are requested? No
Shift times: 0700-1930 & 1900-0730
Schedule cycle: 4 weeks
Other notes:
Scrub Color: provided scrubs are navy blue, but Mother Baby is permitted to wear their own scrubs. L&D is expected to change into scrubs at the hospital. May wear their own or hospital provided if on the floor but must wear hospital laundered in the OR
Parking: Free
Staffing typically 6-8 RNS on nights with 1-2 on call for L/D; typically 6-7 RNS scheduled on nights for Mother/Baby.
